If anything, our Vintage Port has been our signature wine dating back to our first vintage in 1981. In the late 70’s, my dad got interested in Portuguese port wines, but was disappointed in the quality of California versions that were being made from Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah. They were simple and one dimensional. He reached out to UC Davis and ended up planting five traditional Portuguese varieties in our Amador County vineyard.  We ended up bottling that first vintage from 1981, after the winery that bought the grapes filled bankruptcy and my dad “reclaimed” the wine. It was a big hit, and over the past 33 years we’ve bottled 13 Vintage Ports.

Wine Profile
Production Notes
It’s a wine we only produce in the best years, when Mother Nature delivers that magical combination of growing conditions to produce exceptional quality wines. It’s been six years since we bottled our last Vintage Port from 2006, and we ran out of that a couple years ago. 2012 was a great year. It is a blend of six Portuguese varieties – Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca, Tinta Cao, Souzao, and Bastardo all grown in our Sierra Foothill vineyard. A relatively light harvest delivered beautiful grapes packed with flavor. In early 2013 we carefully tasted and selected only the best barrels for this wine, blended, and left the wine untouched until bottling. It was bottled unfined and unfiltered in March of 2014.
Winemaker Notes
In over 30 years of growing and crafting vintage ports we’ve learned a lot, improved our vineyard, and perfected our winemaking. There are no real secrets, just consistent and careful execution. Our Vintage Port is our finest effort! It is the best grapes from the best years selected from the best barrels to make this wine. It’s a massive, decadent, full-bodied dessert wine with intense aromas of spice, chocolate, and berries. It explodes with concentrated flavors that coat your mouth and linger for minutes. It’s destined to evolve for decades.
